London, UK, 2 February, 2024: The Global Transmission Database is now available on Zenodo. A collaboration between TransitionZero, Simon Fraser University, Climate Compatible Growh (CCG) and Dartmouth College, which led the data collection, the dataset consists of comprehensive data regarding cross-border transmission capacities globally collated from public sources.

The Global Transmission Database formed the basis for our global interconnector report that highlighted the economic benefits of transmission investments to decarbonise global electricity supply using our open energy modelling platform Model Builder.

The dataset is oriented towards representing entry level capacity data (MW) that can be used in energy system models and other computational tools. Transmission capacities are provided at a country-to-country basis in addition to regional level data for a sample of larger countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Russian Federation, Thailand, United States, Vietnam). Capacities are provided for land-based transmission pathways as well as for subsea pathways.

A scientific paper that describes the data and our methodology behind the The Global Transmission Database is currently undergoing peer-review.
