TransitionZero selected for the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Technical Working Group
New initiative will see GHG Scope 2 accounting standards updated for the variable renewable energy era
London, 17 October, 2024: Climate analytics non-profit TransitionZero today announced it has been selected for the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 2 Technical Working Group that will be central to the development of the technical content for the revision and update of Scope 2 corporate standards. As the electricity generation space is seeing a big shift towards renewables, it is important that the standards and guidelines for emissions accounting keep pace with developments.
Over the past 25 years, Greenhouse Gas Protocol has developed into the world’s most widely used GHG accounting and reporting standard for corporate decarbonisation. As part of a process to update standards and protocols across four areas - Corporate Standard, Scope 2, Scope 3 and Actions and Markets Instruments - the technical working groups were selected following an open call for participants that saw 1,300+ applications.
The aim of the Scope 2 Technical Working Group will be to update the way corporations measure indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which originate from electricity, steam, heat and cooling that is purchased or acquired. TransitionZero will be assisting the technical working group with modelling data, software and expertise on Scope 2 emissions.
Matt Gray, Co-founder and CEO of TransitionZero:
“We are immensely proud to be selected for the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Technical Working Group. Due to the rapid growth of renewables, the current Scope 2 emissions accounting framework does require a revamp. The evolution of these standards will require energy systems modelling to understand the cost, emissions, and investment implications. We’re excited to contribute to improving the standard and hope our system modelling software can support these discussions.”
