Asset-level estimates of steel plant production costs globally

The Global Steel Cost Tracker (GSCT) is an open data product that estimates the plant-level steel production costs of blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) production routes representing around 90% of global production. The cost estimates are broken down by raw materials, energy, labour, and other costs.

GSCT is based on a methodology report by TransitionZero and a database of steel plants developed by the Global Energy Monitor (GEM). GSCT can be used to:

  • Compare and contrast production costs by route and region

  • Support steel sector decarbonisation modelling and analysis

  • Inform procurement and risk management decisions
